Assets and Opportunities: Growing Wealth, Reducing Poverty and Achieving Equity in Rural America

Consultation held May 30th – June 1st, 2006 Washington, D.C.
NRCF hosted a two-day, invitation-only forum, which included keynote addresses and twenty-one (21) small consultative sessions. The convening provided a rare opportunity for practitioners to give feedback and consultation to theoreticians on the subject of rural wealth creation and transformation. The excitement of the event was in the ideas exchange among practitioners and other participants. Dr. Michael Sherraden’s latest research, “Wealth Building in Rural America: Perspectives, Knowledge, Outlook” provided the framework for much of the general discussion. Dr. Sherraden’s report delves into the past for insights and perspectives on current conditions, while identifying challenges and opportunities for the next phase of rural America’s development. Participants engaged in extensive conversations regarding the research and its implications when factors such as race, ethnicity, age, and economic status are taken into consideration.
